| INFORMATION > SCHOOL DISTRICTS > OVERVIEW
Pennsylvania's Constitution requires the State
Legislature to provide the framework for a system of public schools which
serve the needs of the Commonwealth. To fulfill this responsibility,
the state put in place a system of 501 local public school districts.
The Pennsylvania
Department of Education was created to help these school districts
administer their educational programs in compliance with the Pennsylvania
School Code to the nearly 2 million students
enrolled in more than 3,300 public schools .
